Calendula
An annual or biennial herb approximately 50 cm tall. The stem is straight, usually branched. The leaves are alternate, hairy, lanceolate to narrowly obovate, the lower ones narrowed into a petiole, the upper ones truncate or cordate at the base and sessile. Flower heads individual at the ends of branches, numerous ligulate flowers, disc flowers tubular, in some garden varieties transformed into ligulate flowers, color most often orange.
It is easy to grow, prefers a sunny environment, and should be dried in the dark or in dim light, which also applies to storage. It is used to prepare teas for digestive tract disorders and stimulates liver function. It is an excellent antioxidant. Externally, it is used to treat skin inflammation and injuries.
It is very easy to grow and is suitable for both children and adult beginners: Calendula is undemanding in terms of location and will grow well in full sun or partial shade. The soil should be nutritious; drier growing conditions improve the quality of the flowers and leaves.
