Lemon balm
It originates from the eastern Mediterranean and Asia Minor. It is cultivated in numerous countries, including ours, in fields and gardens. It occasionally grows wild.
It is a perennial herb up to 90 cm tall. The stem is square and branched. The leaves are opposite, long-stalked, up to 6 cm long, wrinkled, broadly ovate, sparsely hairy, pointed, and coarsely serrated. The upper leaves have shorter petioles and are almost wedge-shaped. They are rich green on the upper side and paler and glabrous on the underside, with more prominent veins. The flowers are white or pinkish, the calyx is two-lipped, and there are four stamens. The fruit consists of four achenes.
In small doses, it calms the digestive tract, increases bile secretion, prevents gas formation, slows the heart rate, and lowers blood pressure.
